As you’ve hopefully read in this story by now, Florida State defensive coordinator Mark Stoops has officially signed his one-year contract extension worth an additional $135,000 of annual salary.

Earlier this morning, the Orlando Sentinel and a few other media outlets received copies of Stoops’ amended contract that was signed Friday by him and athletic director Randy Spetman.

The contract says Stoops will continue to be paid his base $205,000 annual salary. But now, instead of the $235,000 he was earning in additional compensation, he’ll be making $370,000 per year. That’s a $135,000 spike in pay; nearly a 60 percent raise.

As we wrote earlier this offseason, Stoops’ bump wasn’t a surprise. After a contentious postseason in which several teams made bids for the coordinator’s services as an assistant and head coach, it was almost to be expected that the powers that be would give him some kind of additional compensation.

And rightfully so.

Turning one of the nation’s worst defenses into one of the best in two short seasons is laudable and commendable, to be sure. Having three of the unit’s best playmakers decide to come back for another season is equally praiseworthy. Oh yeah, and we can’t forget the anticipated hefty, highly-rated, defense-driven recruiting class the Seminoles are close to bringing in.

So, what do you say about Stoops’ extension and the terms of it? Like it? Hate it? Think he deserves more? Deserves less? Chime on in …
